If you’ve made the decision to live on a budget, shopping for clothing may seem like a thing of the past. As much as you may limit frivolous spending, the need for clothing will eventually come up. Being on a budget, does not mean you can’t still build a quality wardrobe and buy clothing that you like and feel good in.
Shop the Sales
Scour through the clearance racks at stores. If you take your time and look through the sale and clearance items, you could find what you need and save money. It might more difficult to find what you are looking for in your size, but when you come across a good deal, it is worth the search and the wait.
On the same note, clearance racks often have items from the past season they are trying to get rid of, so why not stock up for next year? At the end of the winter, heading into spring, shop for winter clothing you can wear next year!
I get it, thrifting is a love it or hate it kind of thing. If you love scouring thrift stores to find good deals on great items, that will help you tremendously! If you are not into that, there are great ways to shop second-hand online!
ThredUp has great quality clothing at great prices. You can shop by brand, style, and search for specific sizes. It is a lot easier than going to a store to shop secondhand, where there is no guarantee you will find what you want. ThredUp is a huge operation and will likely have something similar to what you are looking for in your size!
Sell what you don’t wear
If you are someone who likes to keep your wardrobe fresh and trendy, selling your old clothes is a great way to do this while sticking on a budget. You can sell your stuff locally through organizations like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. You can also use ThredUp Clean Out. Through this, you can send in your clothing items you no longer use and get paid for them. They handle the selling of your items for you.
Selling your clothing is a great way to organize your closet, keep your wardrobe fresh and make money back or save money on clothing purchases! It’s a win win!
Buy Quality Staple Clothing Items
I’m all about finding cheap clothing to wear, but I also know the importance of quality over quantity. There are several staple items that everyone has in their closet. These are the items that you wear over and over again with any outfit. They are versatile, go with many outfits, and will be in your life for at least 3-5 years.
These items will be worth spending a little extra money on because quality items will last. I will often look for cheap fashion items but spend a little more money on my staple wardrobe pieces.
Staple pieces in your wardrobe will vary from person to person but for me it includes the following:
- Black Pants
- Black Dress
- Tennis Shoes
- Black leggings
- Winter Coat
- Rain Coat
- Lightweight jacket
These items I will wear all the time in the right season and they don’t go out of style. I choose to spend a little more money on these items (within reason) so I don’t have to buy the items again for a while.
Shop with Intent
Make a list of what you want/need and stick to it. If you go to the store, without knowing what you are looking for, you will end up with clothes you don’t need. Shopping from a list can help you to avoid impulse buys you won’t wear.
You don’t have to wear dirty old clothes to stay on a budget. If you play it smart, it is possible.
