Summer Jobs for Teachers and College Students

Budget Debt Payoff Finances Money Side Hustles

Since High School, I have spent a majority of my spring seasons looking for summer jobs. As a teacher, looking to pay off debt, finding a summer job was essential. But I still wanted a refreshing summer so I could return to teaching fully refreshed and ready to teach again.

I could have easily found a job as a summer school teacher. As I thought through my options, summer school had limited hours, which mean limited pay, and I realized I wanted to use my summer to do something completely different. I wanted a low stress and fun job (not that teaching wasn’t fun but a break helped me be a better teacher throughout the year).

Luckily, there are many seasonal jobs for students and teachers in the summer. As I have looked, here are a few that I have found that are great options!

Wedding Industry

Wedding season is in full swing in the summer, so wedding venues are often looking for more help. The wedding industry is pretty broad and so there are many areas to look into if you are looking for something unique and to match your interests.

The most common would be a wedding venue or caterer. If you help with serving at a wedding, you will likely have plenty of hours to work on the weekend and more time during the week off. Plus, you will likely get a portion of the tip added to your check, which is typically a sizeable addition to your base pay. Golf courses, hotels, and venues specific to weddings and events are all places to check out if you are interested in serving for weddings.

Other wedding ideas to look into is a DJ service, wedding photography, and wedding planners.

Golf Course

If you are in an area where there are distinct seasons, then there will be a need for workers at golf courses in the summer. I did this as a teacher and LOVED the job! I drove the Beverage Cart and loved being outdoors and working a low stress job with tips. Best part, everybody is always happy to see you!

If you are not into driving the beverage cart, there are often openings for pro shop workers, ground maintenance, caddy’s (depending on the course and you will have to have golfing knowledge if you do this one), bartending, serving for events, and snack shop positions.

There are plenty of options to choose from at a golf course. The perks of working at a golf course include free golf and great tips, depending on your position. I am not a golfer, but my husband sure loved the perk!

Tutoring

As a student or a teacher, there are so many parents looking for summer tutors so there kids can get a leg up or don’t fall behind over the long summer. If you are a teacher, school districts often have positions or send out a list of tutors to parents.

Parents also often post their need for a tutor on job boards and on college websites.

There are also sites that offer tutoring online. Tutor.com is a site that allows you to work and tutor online. All you need is high speed internet and to pass tests on specific subjects to be allowed to tutor.

The benefit to tutoring is that you can choose your schedule and your rate if you are a private tutor. As a teacher in Wisconsin I charged $30 an hour for a tutoring session. If you work for an agency, the agency will pay you a set amount.

Summer camp counselor

Working at a summer camp is another great summer option. The camaraderie that forms in environments like this is a wonderful perk. Plus the options are endless and if you search, you can likely find something that fits your interests and hobbies in your area.

I worked for Camp Adventure. You only get paid a stipend through Camp Adventure but the summer also counts for college credits and they pay for your travel to work in different countries on American Military Bases. During my summer, I worked in Stuttgart, Germany and was able to travel on the weekends to other countries. If you are looking for an experience and opportunity to travel, this is a great option and something worth looking into.

Nanny and Babysitting

Many families are looking for some extra help during the summer when kids are off of school. Care.com is a great place to search for nannying and babysitting jobs in your area. This potentially is a job in which you can have as much fun as the kids by bringing them to participate in different summer activities.

Personal Care Worker

Working with people with disabilities, special needs or a person that needs a little extra help in their day is challenging and so incredibly rewarding. I worked as a PCA in college and right after college and loved the personal contacts I made. They made an incredible impact on my life and I enjoyed going to work every day. I had a great experience with this and recommend this to anyone. There are several state and private agencies to look into depending on your area.

Bartending and Serving at a bar or restaurant

Restaurants are often busier in the summer and look for additional help from seasonal workers. As a bartender or server you are able to make some decent money through tips. If you enjoy working with people, making tips in this way can be a rewarding and fast paced job.

Temp Agency

Applying to a temp agency can lead you to a great temporary position at various companies.  Applying with a temp agency to gain experience can be a great option for those looking for something specific or to simply try something new.

Kelly Services is a great place to start and has a large number of options in most areas around the country.

Driving for Uber is a great flexible job that allows you to pick your schedule and virtually work for yourself. If you are looking for something flexible and have a working car, you can make extra money by working only the hours that you are available.

Trip fares start with a base amount, then increase with time and distance. And when demand is higher than normal, drivers earn more.
